NADFAS HERITAGE VOLUNTEERS work in preventative conservation projects which support long term protection of our historic heritage.
In all fields of work basic training must be given.
Our Sussex Area comprises 24 Societies with 13 Heritage Volunteer Groups
involved in projects at various venues including Brighton Pavilion and Museum, Worthing Museum and Art gallery, Horsham Museum, Petworth
House, Tangmere Military Museum and Arundel Castle. . Volunteers also act as Guides and Stewards.
The work in a great
library as found at Arundel Castle consists of dusting and polishing books. In the Archives, careful light cleaning of Historical
Manuscripts, Architectural Plans, Estate Papers and Ledgers requires great care as many are priceless records covering hundreds of
years of family history..
The polishing and cleaning of valuable silver items on display is an ongoing process regularly organised at The Brighton Pavilion.
Petworth House has a regular team for cleaning the armoury collection and the remarkable kitchen utensils.
Volunteers who work
on Textile Conservation require a specialised training by accredited professional Conservators. This work is highly skilled
as there must be a fine balance between conserving the item without too much intervention or alteration. The greatest requirements
needed by a volunteer are enthusiasm and adapability plus a love of the fine arts.
